"My Antonia" written by Willa Cather, is a modernist look at the experiences faced by immigrants in the American frontier at this time, this gives it a softer point of view, compared to the harshness of Sinclair's work. Sinclair said that he "aimed for America's heart and hit it in the stomach," (1) his account of Jurgis Rudkus' struggle to find a new life in America in the face of poverty, illness and degradation.
