The narrator explains: the thing I came for: the wreck and not the story of the wreck the thing itself and not the myth Rich aims to create a new image and role for women rather than trying to conform to conventional views. In the poem the narrator explains that I am having to do this not like Cousteau with his assiduous team aboard the sun-flooded schooner but here alone. Cousteau was an underwater explorer and had a team of men. Women were not involved in this type of activity. Here however, the female narrator overcomes the boundaries imposed by society to achieve the same as the team of experienced men achieving equality for women.
