In January 1917 D'annunzio, a nationalist intellectual led 2,000 men into Fuime to capture the city in defiance of the government and the decision at the Paris peace conference. D'annuzio ruled Fiume for over year and became a national hero in Italy, during this time the government did attempt to stop D'Annuzios revolution, showing that it was weak and ineffectual. In January 1921, the Italian troops drove D'Annunzio and his followers from Fiume, and this caused great resentment, this was a great turning point for fascist growth and support.
