The Liberals picked up on this and showed how poor the working class was in Britain using reports by Rountree and Booth and how most people now couldn't join the army. They also pointed out how the army was not good enough to protect the Empire because they didn't beat the Boers quickly enough and had to resort to barbaric ways in order to win.
