Immigrants and migrants found it very hard to get jobs in work as it seemed to be dominated by natives and whites. There was a lot of racial discrimination in the industries, but as cinema and jazz were a relatively new industry, it was very easy for them to get jobs as there was no one to stop them. It as also a way to earn money as many immigrants set up nickelodeons for a job. The blacks mainly dominated jazz as it was their music, developed from the African traditional music.
