Release dates could also be relevant to the time of year displayed in the film itself e.g. 'Elf', a Christmas film, was released on 28th November 2003, ready for Christmas, as are most Christmas films. Different films are distributed fairly evenly throughout the year. The big 'blockbuster' films are never released on the same day, or too near to each other because they'd achieve less of an audience and would gain less money.
