The Triple alliance consisted of Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy; the Triple Entente consisted of Britain, France and Russia. These alliances eventually led to the assassination that sparked the war. Before the war, France had recently lost the Franco-Prussian War with Germany. The Germans made the French sign the Treaty of Frankfurt which stated that the land of Alsace-Lorraine now belonged them. The Germans had the treaty signed in the Palace of Versailles, the symbol of French patriotism. This angered the French and they sought revenge. The German Kaiser was a very militaristic man; he enjoyed wearing military uniforms and parading around Germany. The Kaiser was jealous of the industry, army, navy and empire of both Britain and France, and wanted to expand Germany so that it too could have an empire.
