Most European countries had suffered great losses, whether, in man, or economic losses so when it came to signing the treaty especially the French P.M. wanted revenge towards Germany and to please his people together with his uncompromising and aggressive attitude he was not willing to compromise and therefore looked at things in a not logic way, making him do decisions which when looked back today seem very harsh and rough. There is no way Germany was going to sign the treat if they weren't in such a difficult position and even when they did sign it they believed that the treaty could not be justified.
