Hitler successfully united the nation under his leadership by uniting them under a common goal, creating a Voltsgemeinschaft. Hitler sent out the message that Germany should be unified; he achieved this through the smashing of the unions and creating one trade union, the DAF in which workers were required to join. He also put an end to party politics with the NSDAP emerging as the sole party and put an end to federalism so that the Lander were now controlled under one centralised government. Hitler seemed to have deliberately operated a dual state and created parallel institutions, which competed with each other for power and the approval of Hitler.
