By the 1840's Titus Salt was operating five mills in Bradford. As proven by extracts A to E the living conditions in Bradford at this time were horrendous. In extract A it describes Bradford as hell, "Where Satan keeps his seat" This was due to the smoke around the town and the filth on the streets. Titus Salt became Mayor of the town in 1848-9, a borough magistrate and an MP between 1859 and 1861. As written in extract G Titus Salt was concerned about the welfare of his workers and wanted to improve the standards of the town.
