... Brief Account of the Destruction of the Indies. Felipe Guaman Poma's main objective in his twelve-hundred page composition is twofold: 1) to inform Philip III of Spain about the problems of colonialism and the required governmental reforms, and 2) to relate Andean history to Christian history while mutually expressing despair in the colonial campaigns trying to terminate the native religion. The chapter on "Religious and Moral Considerations" provides two illustrations how Poma's first objective becomes evident. Poma framed his protest and disapproval against injustice and his formal plans for imperial reform on the basis of his concern over various sources of Native and African suffering. Two of his drawings which exhibit the violence and abusive treatment from the colonists are "The fearless royal administrators and priests mistreat the poor Indians of this kingdom (pg. 936)" and "How the Spaniards abuse their African slaves (pg. 939)."
