The Derby's were rich and powerful, they tried to persuade Mr. Townley to change his mind but they failed. They all made things very difficult and Townley's plans were abandoned. In 1794 the building of the canal started. The canal was completed in sections. This shows that they did not have enough money to do it all at once. When they had enough money they built the next section until they finally completed the canal in 1804. The canal was built without any mechanical diggers or Lorries.
