In the late 19th Century Stevenson wrote one of his now most famous and well known books, 'The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde' The book today is very unlikely to shock the now modern readers as the story contains very little of the graphic horror that is usual of the modern horror stories we read today. The novel is very clearly a book that comes from the Victorian time so much of its shock was because of the society's hypocrisy. It was a time when appearances were everything and a double life would definitely have been disapproved of and would ruin a man's reputation. Throughout the story Stevenson links the environment of the poor, dirty, scruffy parts of society with Mr Hyde - the evil side.
