The very fact that the temple of Zeus exists emphasises the important place the gods held at the sanctuary and in everyday Greek life. The temple of Hera, one of the oldest monumental temples in Greece, lies in the north-west corner of the sacred precinct of the Altis, on the south slopes of Kronios hill, confined by a powerful terrace wall.
