Greece in the 8th century was still very much a tribal society divided by an agonistic culture which resulted in competing city states. Only in times of great battles would several cities join allegiance against a common enemy and once victory was achieved the alliance would be depleted2. Economic problems seem, from literary evidence3, to have affected many of the cities and each dealt with it differently. The larger states that were suffering from over population and therefore land hunger were more likely to send communities off to build a colony.
