There are many variables that I could change in my investigation to see what factors effect the rate of osmosis: * Type of membrane * Concentration of salt solution * Length of membrane * Mass of membrane * Temperature of water The variable that I have chosen to change is the concentration of the solution. I am going to look at how different concentrations of salt solutions effect potato cells. This will allow me to see if osmosis takes place and to what extent. My prediction is that: I think this because if the solution around the chip has a higher concentration of salt, but a lower concentration of water than the chip, the water will move from the chip to the solution by osmosis, along a concentration gradient.
