From my own knowledge, I know that canal workers didn't always dress like this. This is one reason I think that the photograph is staged, but I also noticed that the families clothes are made of wool and cotton; this shows how reliable the source can be because I don't think it is a true reflection of canal life. The boat is full of cargo; this will be to maximise profits. If the photograph is staged then it is likely that the company would want their barge to full, because this will advertise good business.
