Like he often did before he begun his final masterpiece, he made an almost endless series of preliminary sketches. After working on La Grande Jatte for two years, Seurat displayed the painting in 1886 at the eighth and final Impressionist exhibition. It measured more than two meters by three. It managed to accomplish successfully a new technique of painting by using dots and as it had never been tried before; his work was received in very different ways. The 'divisionism' technique, as Seurat liked to refer to it as, produced a lot of disapproval amongst the public, critics and other artists. Seurat's technique is intensely personal.
