This man, like many other citizens had preconceptions of the countryside such as "they've nothing there; they were starving there before the war" Many children who were evacuated returned home, some because they were unhappy and some because their parents did not see the need for them to remain there because of the 'phoney war' in which no bombs were dropped on cities.
