For instance in the case of Roe vs. Wade (1972), in which the Supreme Court interpreted the constitution to allow women to have abortions, changed the face of American society. The Supreme Court holds power with which they can strike down laws, mould society and impeach Presidents. This is a huge amount of power for such a small and select group to hold. The President has a huge opportunity to make an impact on American politics when a Justice dies or retires. It is such a rare occasion for a President to be able to elect a Supreme Court Justice, that the process is treated with a lot of regard.
