Surgery is not an obvious choice to try to eliminate blinding trachoma as it only targets those who are susceptible to getting the disease and not prevention. Prevention is the key to eliminating blinding trachoma worldwide. Surgery can be used to treat those with trichiasis who are likely to develop blinding trachoma but it is costly and this type of surgical expertise is not readily available in the countries in which the disease is prevalent.
