... the 'almost impassable' Blue Mountains, as experienced by Ms Henning, would be almost unconceivable to a person of modern times of safe and comfortable travelling. Henning's comment, "I cannot think how ever the horses did it all" would mean almost nothing to today's reader due to our reliance on fuel and machinery to transport us in comfort. It is also very unlikely that a person would be called a 'stupid Irishman' in today's society, especially in a piece of writing. This is just another example pf the difference in time and attitudes between Ms Henning's era and today. In the passage titled "Uluru", Ruby Langford uses language which is much simpler, modern and colloquial. By using short sentences and conjunctions, Langford conveys more blunt honesty and 'real fact' - giving the responder the impression that she is writing as though she would speak.
