Through the eyes of his main character, Chinua Achebe is able to show how the Nigerian people are being lead by a corrupt parliament. Chief the Honorable M.A. Nanga, M.P. is the corrupt politician that Odilli faces and becomes arch enemies with. Odilli tries to run against Nanga, but is beaten due to his ignored appeal to his people. Chief Nanga was on a higher level and was able to beat Odilli by using and abusing his power and prestige. Unlike Odilli who ran a clean election, Chief Nanga and the other member in the parliament use their power and wealth to get what they want. This is a situation is a concept that is quite universal.
