Some weren't even cubes but the name cubism stuck with Picasso's style of work. Picasso started the era of cubism in 1907, with painting that he had called "Les Demoiselles d'Avignon". Pablo Picasso created more than 22,000 works of art during his lifetime. One of the paintings that he did, Las Meninas, he painted 36 times in different styles. To make each of the versions different, he used colours, shapes and space to make each one different from the rest of them.
